Five Degrees

Hawthorn Victoria

A substantial refurbishment and extension, the new works were mediated into the original via a series of geometric rotations: a rotation of 5 degrees to align the new works with a perfect square on view and relationship of Melbourne's CBD grid.

That grid is then extruded and transferred in a third dimension through every detail: it becomes the geometry of the ceilings, joinery and rooms. At its intersection, the new extension pierces the old, providing a seductive suggestion of what lies ahead.

In the same way building rise through the city, the ceiling is raised and recessed providing a dynamic sense of space.

The final floor plan provides a dynamic free flowing plan the links the living areas to the exterior allowing for easy entertaining.
