Stillest Hour Residence
Hawthorn East Victoria
A remarkable house needs a simple brief and a brave client. A simple brief of timber and adaptability: a need to accommodate a growing family, a need for the kids to be seen but not heard.
The house revolves around a courtyard which separates two distinct living areas and provides a line of sight.
Whilst the house provides zones of retreat, the house itself becomes a retreat from the outside: calm, internalized and private. The finishes whilst strong and definitive, become offset by warm timbers and folding lines. As the sun sets, the occupants take their stage: as the sun rises, the circulation spaces come to life.
The residence is featured in Best Australian Architecture.
